Recently some websites are going for a single page or one-page design as a new trend. While this works for marketing a single product or service that does not have much content, this may be very damaging from an SEO perspective, especially for websites that are meant to have broad coverage of products, services or contents.

What is a Single Page or One Page Website?

Have you never heard of it? A Single Page website (also known as a One Page website) is made up of only one HTML or dynamically generated page, with navigation to different sections of the site occurring on the same page (which would normally take a user to a new page). All of the sections are on the same page, and the navigation menu simply scrolls down or jumps to a specific content section.

You can see some beautiful single-page websites here. They can be nice-looking, don’t you think?
A single-page site would be appropriate as the landing page for a PPC / Google Ads/Facebook Ads Campaign because these landing pages should have a single-topic focus and be optimised for only that one topic, the subject of your ad.
If your website does not fit the above profile, a Single Page may not be such a good idea, especially if being found in searches is important to your business.

Why is this so? On-page SEO is an abbreviation for Search Engine Optimization.

One page websites are extremely popular right now. An ever-increasing number of companies have picked them to overexpand multi-page sites to meet the needs of their businesses.

One page limits the opportunities for standard website optimisation and here are  the reasons:

1) Only one keyword phrase: Today it’s usually accepted by SEO types that you can just effectively improve any given site page for one keyword phrase. So having a one-page site, implies you can just focus on a single keyword phrase. Which is a bit pants right?

2) Only one set of MetaData: As with the above, you just get one set of metadata on a one-page site. You have just a single fundamental title tag and just a single meta description to snare your customers and beat them to your site, so it better be wonderful.

3) Page weight: Obviously the more content you press into your one-page design (images, text, videos), the more prominent the probability of a super pudgy page. Google hates heavy pages as they take too long to load. Will your clients hold up notwithstanding the weight or go somewhere else?

4) No internal links: Obviously with no internal pages (aside from perhaps your protection approach) you have zero open doors for internal links, which can be a rich source of SEO adore if done effectively.

5) Few external links: It’s impossible that you will pack a stack of outside links into your one-page site as you would prefer not to remove the concentration from your business.

Google abhors storehouse locales so again a lack of external links is bad for SEO.

On-page SEO factor is why you should avoid Single Page website.

On-page SEO refers to Search Engine Optimization best practices that you apply to individual pages on your website, such as descriptive and keyword-rich title and meta tags, header tags, linking to other pages on your site with keyword-rich anchor text, and organising your content in a strong semantic and informational hierarchy.

It is best practice for on-page SEO to limit each page to a single topic so that it can be optimised with the perfect title, meta tags, description, and content.

Consider this: if you have a single website that offers three or four services, your content will have different headlines, which will immediately confuse the search engine when it scans your page.

Because the title tag and meta description tag are the most important tags and are displayed on the Search Engine Ranking Page, if you cannot optimise your content accordingly, you will score low in SEO.

You only get 60 characters for the title tag content and 160 characters for the meta “description” tag, so if you want to optimise your site for more than one topic, you simply won’t have enough room to leverage these most important on-page SEO elements.

A Single Page Website Means Only One Page in Google’s or Bing’s Index

is one page website good or bad for SEO ?

Search engines will index all of your website’s pages, giving your site multiple chances to appear in searches. When your website only has one page, that is exactly what will be indexed. That is, if you have a lot of services and products, a single page design will seriously hurt your rank and results in search engines.
I have a one-page website that meets my needs; how do I optimise it for SEO?

Having only one page or a single page does not preclude you from optimising your SEO.

Of course, you can, and you should if you are confident in your ability to design a one-page website.

“Websites promote you 24/7: No employee will do that.”

Whats Google’s thoughts on Single Page?

Here are some tips to optimise your one page site:

a) Begin with Keywords and make sure they are visible on your page

Make sure your keywords and key phrases are well on target and reflect your business, work, product. Now after finding the right keywords place them in the title tag, meta tag and page content. Spread them well and don’t stuff them.

b) Internal and External Links

Internal Links:

Structure your website to make Google bots Crawl around your website easily.

Add internal links in your webpages and Blogposts.

External links:

If you could get your friends who are in the same industry to link your site, that would be great.

Ask your business partners and do a post about your business and company on websites where they accept the submission.

Make sure that these places are quality sites, relevant and not spammy.

Social Media is a big place nowadays for building links. Tweet your website, tweet individual pages, share links on Facebook, on your company’s Facebook page, google my business – and they will help your social as well as search engine visibility.

c) Put up fresh content

Writing a regular blog or similar updates on site is good for this. Or at least add some meat to those pages which lack text. Search engine loves content.

d) Use Google Analytics

It is highly recommended to use Web Analytics software such as Google Analytics to monitor your website performance and campaigns. If you have done everything that we recommended from this list, you should be able to track your SEO efforts via your Analytics and tweak your campaigns for goal conversions.

e) Speed up your site

Just as a visitor you don’t like waiting for a webpage to load, the same goes for search engine crawlers. If your site is slow to load, some javascript takes a long time to execute, chances are engine crawlers will not crawl your site properly. For this reason, doing a speed audit of your site is important.

When and how Single Page Websites Can Be a Good Option?

One of the many reasons that single page websites are getting significant popularity among most entrepreneurs is that it is a clean and comprehensible design.

With single-page websites, you end up with minimum UI clutter and the content is broken down into smaller chunks that are easily digestible by the audience.

They also create an interactive journey for the audience visiting your website. Since there are no pages, users can easily navigate their way linearly down the page by simply clicking on an option.

The storyboarding of the website is conducted in such an incredible way that you can clearly absorb the message from the beginning through to the very end.

A plus side to the easy linear navigation system instilled on the website is that it readily converts user.

According to research, a single-page website design can lead to an increased conversion rate up to (>37.5%) on average, as compared to multi-page websites. Since the process is smaller and people have an attention span of a goldfish, single-page website designs do marvels for various kinds of audiences.

Moreover, single-page website designs are also responsive and hence, they work best with mobile. Also, the content published on the website is present in smaller chunks and can easily map on the smaller screen mobile views perfectly. Not to mention, scrolling on the touchscreen becomes incredibly smooth.

Single-page websites are very common these days. To meet the needs of their enterprises, an increasing number of companies are preferring them over-elaborate multi-page websites. They also load much faster than multi-page websites, which is a big plus for most users who can’t wait more than a few seconds for a website to load. Considering this cherry point in mind, these are the few steps that can help you to do SEO for a single page website

  1. Keep your content fresh- Single-page website SEO is pretty hard and limited. You must go beyond basic audience research to create content that people want to communicate with. You must pay attention to every detail to ensure that what you’ve written is up to date. This is how you create content that has value and can be a good idea for a single-page website.
  2. Give Each Content Section an H1 Tag– I think this is the only time I’ll recommend using multiple H1 tags on the same page. An H1 means that the material that follows is distinct from the rest of the page. Each segment should only have one H1.
  3. Be very specific with the keywords- As there are no other pages to use secondary keywords or more keywords, you’ll need to know which keywords will yield the best results, as well as where to position them in your limited space.
  4. The benefit of page authority and domain authority- All of your links are going to point back to the single page of your website. This way single page websites can provide higher page authority.

What are the pros and cons of a single-page website versus multi-page website?

Single page – great for showcasing a single product or service.

  • Simplicity and direction: usually goal-driven to sell a particular product/service/sign-up – cuts to the chase, conversion-oriented
  • good for landing pages and PPC/email campaigns
  • great for lazy developers
  • Quality website
  • Improved information flow
  • It increases user engagement
  • It saves time and cost
  • Mobile and tablet friendly
  • We can create a unique design

Cons

  • Single page websites are not SEO friendly
  • It has a high page load time and page size
  • Content overloaded

  • Difficult to share on social media

Multi-page – great for SEO and establishing yourself as an industry expert.

Pros – All of the above plus;

  • unlimited SEO potential
  • unlimited scalability
  • unlimited marketability
  • unlimited content

Cons – none because you can apply single-page features to a multi-page website, so the only con really is: more work.

What is the need for a sitemap for a single-page website in an SEO point of view?

Without Sitemap, you can’t index URLs on Google bots. Google crawlers will fetch information in front of users if your website or data is indexed in Google bots.

So inserting Sitemap in Google search console is quite necessary either its one page or 100 pages websites.

Sitemap played an important role in SEO for any website, whether it single page website or multi pages website.

There are two types of sitemap :

  • HTML
  • XML

First HTML is user-friendly, through thus user easily views the all page at and get the required information.

On the other hand, XML Sitemap is Search engine friendly. Through these, any search engine knows about your website and get all the required information from the sitemap to index your website.

So to rank your website on search engine and help the user to find about your website it’s necessary to have a Sitemap. IT doesn’t matter if your website has a single page or multi-pages.
