Yes, creating content online is profitable. But it’s something that requires a high level of consistency and quality.
The money just doesn’t come flying in overnight. Let’s say you create a stunning piece of content; whether it’s a video, infographic, blog post, podcast – whatever. For Instance, You are a Lawyer, You have a niche website about your services offered and How you can help others and so on. You are writing Tons of content Pieces and appear in many searches and Get more Page views for your website.
People online then recognize you as an authoritative and voice on that subject( law In this case). Many of your fans and avid readers then reach out to you and wants to pay you x amount per hour as a consultant.
This is just one example of how your content can make you money.
I think everything that exists is content, but that’s just my opinion.
For me, this answer is content. My Facebook status update is content. My Snapchat selfie is content. My long-winded reply to my intern’s request for time off is content.
Why do I see it that way? Because any one of those things can inspire a blog post, video, webinar, etc. that can launch my personal brand to the next level.
Content creation is rarely an instant method of getting profit, but it’s a really effective one if done well. It can be depending on your goals.
Content is mainly used to build brand awareness and offer value to your potential customers.
It’s pretty much the driving force behind engagement and leading them to the next step to take action.
Creating content can be anything from writing blog posts to sharing valuable information that solves their pain points to entertaining them and speaking their language through the use of infographics, gifs and so on.

Online content comes in lots of different forms, including:

So making or writing any of these things counts as creating online content.
As to the first part of your question: whether it’s profitable or not depends on how well you do it, how effectively you share it, and how good your lead conversion is.
For content creation to be profitable, you need to follow some steps:
- Find a topic that solves a problem or query of a significant number of your potential client base.
- Write quality, easy-to-read posts (or create other relevant content) that solves this problem or query. Keep your target audience in mind here, and stick to your company brand for a consistent message that builds trust.
- Get the right people to view or download your content.
The Fundamentals of Content Creation
Content pays off. Here’s just a few fundamentals I’ve learned that I’d share right now on this point.
- Create your BEST content if you want it to pay off. Spend time on the research and ideas just as much as the publishing/promoting part.
- Be CONSISTENT and maintain quality with quantity. Set a schedule, and if you can’t keep it, hire a writer. By all means. If you drop that schedule, you run the risk of losing the consistency of your audience and incoming traffic. I write my best pieces all the time and can still maintain 40 pieces a month. I have a content + design team (my entire company 😉 helping me here.
- Long-form, guide style content pays OFF. Interestingly enough, although most people have the attention span of a goldfish, we’re still looking for thorough answers to the questions we type in Google. Write and create content that answers a question thoroughly. Do not skimp. All my blogs are 1000+ words and it’s often hard to keep them “short” because of the heavy topics I address and write guides on.
- VARY your content types. Infographics, SlideShares, infographics are just as much content publication as the meat of it: written content in the form of web pages and blogs.
How do you generate Ideas for content?
The biggest mistake people make when trying to come up with ideas for content is this:
Creating ideas that they think will work, based on nothing but their intuition.
This is an issue because you have no clue if the idea will work or not.
Some people may think they know, but really, knowing which topics are winners and which are losers is a lot more complicated than people think:
- Your target audience may not like the topic (result: no engagement)
- The topic has been covered excessively by others (result: extreme competition=lack of visibility)
- The people you reach out to, to promote your content, may not like the topic (result: no promotional avenues)
- The topic is unrelated to your niche (result: the people it attracts have no interest in what you are selling)
But thankfully, there are ways of completing research, before diving into content creation, that will ensure you create a blog post that is engaging, stands out, promotor-friendly, and is related to your niche.
The first thing any blogger or marketer should do when diving into content marketing is to create a list of other blogs and website within the niche or shoulder niche. Not only will this provide a source of inspiration, but also a list of potential promoters.
- Google “[your niche here] blog” or similar search strings to find blogs in your niche
- Find your niche category on AllTop.com – Popular News Sites for Any Topic and find blogs related to your niche
- Search strings like “best blogs in [niche name]” or “[niche name] blogs you should be following]” to get lists of blogs in your niche.
If you are having trouble finding blogs in your niche that aren’t direct competitors, you could try checking out possible shoulder niches.
i.e. some common shoulder niches:
for SEO (everybody blogs about that) => Blogging Tactics (much less competitive)
for Cavoodles Dogs (no one blogs about that!) => Pets (much larger audience)
Once you have a decent list of all the best blogs in your niche or shoulder niches, you can use that information to identify what people want from you.
- Find out each blog’s top articles (use SEO Software, Tools & Resources for Smarter Marketing or any other tool to rank their pages by links or shares)
- Identify common themes across the top blog posts
- Identify areas that have proven popular, but haven’t been covered definitively
- Identify topics you can cover more in-depth or more generally
Then all you have to is create first-class, quality, and actionable content based on the topics you have already proven to be popular; and promote it like crazy.

L – Leading and not just following
